"The Powerful Bond"

My multi-channel sound and light installation"The Powerful Bond" will be presented by the artist collective ALLGOLD and installed at the MoMA PS1 Printshop on Septemper 5th, 2015.

The Powerful Bond (2013)

(piezo transducers, LED lights, speaker wire & galvanized wire)

5 chandeliers, 10 channels

The Powerful Bond is a spatialized, multi-channel, ambient installation inspired by light and music cognition. The form of each chandelier is based on the molecular structure of either sapphire, emerald or citrine quartz and utilizes color compatible LEDs in the hues of blue, green and yellow. The frequencies explored are 528Hz (heart healing), 852Hz(spiritual order), an implied binaural beat of 4Hz(deep meditation) and a heart pulse of 60bpm. Using psychoacoustics, binaural theories and various hued LEDs the environment of The Powerful Bond becomes a multi-sensory space that provides the viewer with a unique visual and aural experience.

Music of James Tenney

As part of their current season dedicated to Carolee Schneemann, The Artist's Institute presents a concert of rarely performed works by composer James Tenney (1934-2006), Schneemann's romantic and creative partner during the first decade of her career.

At the center of the program are selections from Tenney's Postal Pieces (1965-1971), a series of eleven compositions originally written on postcards to contemporaries including Philip Corner, Alison Knowles, and La Monte Young, among others.

Also included in the program is the early "Improvisation for Cello" (1956), as well as several late instrumental ensemble works and electroacoustic tape pieces. Eric Smigel, associate professor of music at San Diego State University, will introduce the concert with a presentation on the late composer's life and work with Schneemann.

Performers: Shelley Burgon, Richard Carrick, Conrad Harris, Miguel Frasconi, Chris McIntyre, Reuben Radding, Katie Porter, Alex Waterman and David Shively

Open to Intersections: Harvard Art Museums New Building Project

Harvard Art Museums
32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA
November 6, 2014
8:00pm – 10:00pm

A curated evening with guest artists, Scott Kiernan and Victoria Keddie to interpret the new Harvard Art Museums Building, (HAM), designed by Renzo Piano.

Evening event consists of a program that encompasses, sound, video, surveillance, architecture, and dance.

A new sound work will be performed live in the interior courtyard of the building. The piece, "3:16:3" by VictoriaKeddie, is based off of Le Corbusier's measurement exercises in The Modular. These exercises of pattern, color, and measure are interpreted through notation for three concert harps. The piece is a translation of the only Le Corbusier building in North America that is adjoined to the new Renzo Piano building by umbilical ramp way. The  Harpists: Shelley Burgon, Mary Lattimore, and Mia Theodoratus.

A wireless surveillance system has been installed within the building, to broadcast the breathing elements within the architecture.  The audience are invited to tour the building as they watch themselves, watching the building, watching us, watching them.

A commissioned video work by Scott Kiernan and Victoria Keddie, will be screened throughout the evening.

A commissioned dance performance  directed by Jill Johnson and the Harvard Dance Group will also be performed on the Le Corbusier ramp way and into courtyard area of Renzo Piano building.

This event is free for Harvard undergraduate and graduate students; a current Harvard University ID is required for admission. Space is limited and tickets are required.

Ne(x)tworks Plays New Works by Paul Pinto, Gelsey Bell, Miguel Frasconi

Since 2002, New York’s superb Ne(x)tworks ensemble has collaboratively created and interpreted works with a dynamic relationship between composition and improvisation. Tonight they return to ISSUE for an early evening concert with a program of new works by composers Paul Pinto, Gelsey Bell, and ensemble-member Miguel Frasconi. Paul Pinto’s Unintelligible Response, features renowned contemporary vocalist Joan La Barbara as the posthumous spirit of Thomas Paine, in a scene from his forthcoming operaThomas Paine in Violence. Gelsey Bell’s Weight, written for Ne(x)tworks and for ISSUE Project Room’s theater, receives its world premiere this evening. Miguel Frasconi’s Sun Studies, featuring vocalists Bell and La Barbara with instrumental ensemble, interprets Ruth Krauss and Antonio Frasconi’s poetic textThe Cantilever Rainbow (1965) in auditory events.

Pat Noeker, also known as RAFT, former member of NYC outfits Liars and These Are Powers, now curates one of the coolest things we've ever seen (or heard): Assemble: Transmissions in A & E. (see video of last year's event) RAFT gathers performers from the city's underground + experimental music scenes, scatters them around a room, and sets them (somewhat) loose — creating a personalized, fully immersive music experience that alters depending where you're standing, and all together is larger than the sum of it's parts.

In 2013, Paper Magazine listed Assemble in their recap of events to "cure your CMJ fatigue", previewing the event as "immersive, brainy, and dark around the edges". 2014 brings back a similar vibe, and features musicians Shelley BurgonAlexandra Drewchin Jr., Kate Henderson,  Sto LenLaura OrtmanRAFTSarah RegisterMike SherbaPat Spadine and Austin Vaughn.

Shelley Burgon performs the music of Pauline Oliveros

Pauline Oliveros, composer, performer, author and philosopher, has left a profound imprint American music through her decades of work with improvisation, electronic music, teaching, myth, ritual and meditation. Now celebrating her 81st year, Oliveros returns to ISSUE as part of Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain for a performance of Primordial Lift (1998), a surreal work centered around a low frequency oscillator, mirroring the resonant frequency of the earth. The large ensemble work includes performers Anne Bourne , David Grubbs, Miguel Frasconi, Shelley Burgon, Jason Hwang, and Matthew Cullen.

Pauline is an amazing former professor of mine from Mills College who still maintains a very influential space in my life. I am very honored to be performing on her low frequency oscillator for this piece with her along with the other great musicians on the bill.

Ne(x)tworks joins forces with JACK Quartet for these world premiere performances of composer, multi-instrumentalist, and electric harp pioneer Zeena Parkins's latest work, Spellbeamed. Commissioned by Ne(x)tworks, Spellbeamed takes inspiration from literary critic Walter Benjamin’s Archive, a published trove of images, texts, and ephemera collected by the author. For Parkins’s new composition, quotidian materials collected by each musician are utilized to form an animated score developed in collaboration with visual artist Cynthia Madansky. The resultant sound is further enhanced with live-processing by Preshish Moments and the composer, creating an ecology of inter-relationships developed between improvisers and readers, sound and score, objects and instruments. Both evenings begin with the premieres of three additional works by Ne(x)tworks composers Joan La Barbara, Miguel Frasconi, and Chris McIntyre.

Elliott Sharp presents two aspects of Carbon: the quartet and the orchestra. The smaller group functions like a rock band with the spontaneous freedom of a chamber ensemble or jazz group. The larger ensemble presents long form, structured pieces and algorithmic compositions such as SyndaKit, Quarks Swim Free, and Flexagons: self-organizing systems in which a simple set of rules and composed fragments yield ever-changing results.

Featuring: Shelley Burgon - electric harp, Marc Sloan - electric bass, Joseph Trump - drums. percussion, Elliott sharp - 8-string guitarbass, soprano saxophone, electronics and the orchestra will feature additional musicians Jenny Lin - piano, Russ flynn - electric bass and Danny Tunick - percussion, vibraphone.
